The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a vast agreement that would cover about 40 percent of the global economy, is a key plank in Obama's bid for a renewed focus on Asia. It is also seen as crucial for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's pledge to shake up his country's long-lumbering economy. But the ambitious 12-nation deal has stalled as Tokyo and Washington lock horns over key details, including Japanese…

  • #TBT: Iter Avto, the first in-car navigation device

    Ronnie Bulaong
    24 Apr 2014 | 6:39 am
Long before humans thought of putting satellites in space and use them for GPS tracking, there’s this device called the Iter Avto which aid drivers to navigate their way around the block. Invented in the 1930’s, the Iter Avto comes with a set of paper maps that were rolled inside its fairly large body. It is then connected to the car’s speedometer which basically dictates the pace in which the Iter Avto scrolls the maps to show the approximate location of the driver. Unfortunately, despite of its bulky frame, the Iter Avto can only accommodate a certain number of maps. This means that…

Irving in explaining the long history of Filipino musicians playing Western music: …there was a rich experience of musical contact and exchange between Spaniards and Filipinos that began not long after the Spaniards established their control over the Philippines in the sixteenth century. Filipinos therefore learned Western musical forms long before many other peoples in Asia, and that to some extent can explain why they started to be sought after in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when aspects of Western culture started to take hold in…

  • Just another imperialist bully

    3 Apr 2014 | 9:35 pm
THE death of Mao Zedong in 1976 led to the dominance of Deng Xiaoping and his like-minded colleagues in the Chinese leadership. To Mao’s insistence that China should hew to the socialist path of development, Deng argued that “it doesn’t matter whether a cat is white or black so long as it catches mice”–i.e., that capitalism could just as well, and even better drive, China’s development. Thirty-eight years later it seems that Deng had a point. Although socialist in name, China is now a capitalist society. It has the world’s second largest economy, and its cities throb with…

Echoing the country’s former and current colonizers, the Philippine government calls what the guerillas of the New People’s Army (NPA) are waging an “insurgency.” But more accurately can it be described as a war–and a war that has been going on for over a century. That war has been described as “the longest running” of its kind in Asia and quite probably in the entire world. Forty-five years have passed since the founding of the NPA in…

“If I die, Mama, will I be alive again?” , my son asked. is a post from: A Filipina Mom Blogger ““If I die, Mama, will I be alive again?” Luijoe asked. My six-year-old was lying on the bed, flipping through the prayer books piled on his tummy. It was Holy Week, a month before that fateful day of May 27, 2000. I turned my body to face his and stroked his cheek. How could I explain the mysteries of death to a little boy? ““When we die, Lui, we will live forever, through eternal life in heaven,” I said the lines I’d memorized from the teachings of our…

Our first family staycation...Technically, a staycation is a vacation without leaving the home; it's where the family engages in activities within their residence or somewhere near, yet still sleeping in their own beds at night. The former term is more commonly used locally though, so we'll just stick with that.We were invited for a 3-day / 2-night family staycation at the B Hotel in Alabang. Naturally, we were excited. It was a much needed getaway from all the stress and…

Follow the purple silk road...If you're hankering for some Thai food, Silk Road is probably one of the best restaurants to visit to satiate those cravings. This modern bistro is a brain child of Chef Cecille Chang, and aims to give you a contemporary Thai experience in a setting far removed from the streets of Bangkok. They have wines, cocktails, and other liquor, backed up by the bottles seen behind the bar. But when in a Thai place, I usually go for their Thai Milk Tea, the sweet blend very fitting for their spicy profferings, as the milk gently tempers each kick.Soft Shell Crab Roll…
