  • A Take on Filipino Identity

    The Pinoy Warrior

Image from Laz'andreI am a true-blooded Filipino. My mother hails from Aklan and my father is from Bulacan. I have lived all my life here in the Philippines, and my feet had never touched foreign ground. I eat adobo, bagoong, nilaga, sinigang, bulalo, and all Filipino food you can think of except Durian (to the guys who like Durian, I did try but this is the part where I believe in "acquired tastes"). I believe in the Filipino Spirit, the pride of being Pinoy, the fierceness of our race and the beauty of our women. Yet, a question remains in my head. What is the identity of the Filipino? The…

  • How Ferdinand Marcos’s Martial Law Continues Hurting Filipinos to This Day

    22 Sep 2014 | 5:00 pm
On the evening of September 23, 1972, two days after it had taken effect, Ferdinand Marcos announced via live television from Malacañang Palace that he had placed the Philippines under Martial Law. It was a calculated move by a devious politician to keep himself in power beyond what the Constitution allowed. A staged ambush attempt against his Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile was the main excuse Marcos (or “Macoy” as he was deridingly referred to back then) used to strip Filipinos of all their constitutional rights. With that, the diminutive Ilocano from the backwaters of Batac,…

Her lawyer Stephen David later disclosed to media that Napoles prays 2,000 rosaries a day. Given that a day has only 24 hours or 1,440 minutes, Napoles would have to complete an entire rosary in less than a minute praying non-stop for an entire day…every day. Atty. David also pointed out that Napoles paid for the schooling of at least 200 priests and helped construct many Catholic churches ...

FORTY-TWO years have passed since Ferdinand Marcos placed the entire country under martial law on September 23, 1972 (he signed Presidential Proclamation 1081 on September 21, implementing it only two days later). But some Filipinos still argue that things were better during the dictatorship, while others recall the way the regime ruined countless lives and inflicted on Philippine society its dark legacies of human rights violations, abuse of power, corruption and bad governance. This year, both that practically endless debate and the Marcos family’s decades-long campaign to have the late…

ABOUT THE Middle East and Libya many Filipinos have one fear, and that’s the loss of their jobs as the region and that country fall apart, besieged by the violence of contending sectarian groups and the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). That, together with paeans to their bravery, was the subtext in the expressions of concern over the Filipino peacekeepers’ repatriation last week from the Syrian Golan Heights, peacekeeping under UN auspices being, like other jobs in the Middle East, relatively high-paying at around P45,000 a month. In recent months, fighting in the flashpoints of Iraq,…

    6 Sep 2014 | 12:39 pm
If Cape Bojeador Lighthouse guides ships on the northwestern corner of Luzon, then Cape Engaño Lighthouse (Wikipedia) is its metaphorical sibling, guiding ships on Luzon’s northeastern frontier. This Spanish-era lighthouse, built in 1888 and first used in 1892, sits atop a hill on the northernmost point of Palaui Island in Santa Ana, Cagayan. A ground-level view of the lighthouse building complex from the south. 2 Aug 2014 | 12:07 am
Touted as the longest bridge in Mindanao with a length of 907 meters, the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is one of the top tourist attractions in Butuan City with its raw and elegant design. Similar to the previously-featured Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge in Cebu, the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge except that it has a single tower instead of Fernan Bridge’s pair. I’m also guessing that Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is also the tallest bridge in Mindanao, if not the whole country. Silhouette of the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge’s tower and cables against the late afternoon…

Today, July 27, 2014, is the 100th founding anniversary of Iglesia ni Cristo, which is the largest religion founded by a Filipino, Felix Y. Manalo. To mark this milestone, I am featuring the site of the original temple of the church’s very first congregation in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila. This temple, built in 1937, is now a museum depicting the early years of the church. In Manalo’s honor, the street fronting the original temple was renamed after him. The Punta Cruz Watchtower is the primary symbol of the town of Maribojoc, Bohol and is found on both the seal and flag of the town. Built by the Augustinian Recollects in 1796, the watchtower served as a lookout against marauding pirates and Moros from Mindanao and was dedicated to St. Vincent Ferrer. Located as it is on Bohol’s prominent western point, which also serves as the westernmost point of Maribojoc, the watchtower provides an excellent view of the surrounding waters and of nearby Cebu and Siquijor. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude is a post from: A Filipina Mom Blogger by Tanya Jamon-Navarro as originally posted at Cultivating an attitude of gratitude , Philippine Online Chronicles. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we tend to be very distracted and forget to appreciate the things that matter in our lives. That is why every September 21, Gratitude Day is celebrated all over the world. This tradition originated in an international gathering in Hawaii in 1965 when the members of the conference suggested that one day of each year should be devoted to express appreciation. Since…

Parenting, Pinoy Style is a post from: A Filipina Mom Blogger By Richard Leo Ramos as originally posted at the Philippine Online Chronicles. For many Filipinos, parents are seen with a somewhat confusing dichotomy: while they are, short of one’s life partner, the most beloved of people in one’s life, they can also be the ones who can embarrass you the most, or be the ones that you would practically consider as your worst enemies – if they weren’t your parents. Now, most people would probably argue: isn’t that similar to how parents are viewed everywhere else? Well, the truth is,…

July was a good month for politicians who like nothing better than bashing the payday lenders. Not only did the Financial Conduct Authority introduce new regulations to limit the number of times a loan can be rolled over, proposals were also announced to cap the cost of a payday loan. But why are politicians and the press so quick to vilify the payday industry? Amidst the fanfare of July’s regulatory activity, the press was chock-full of choice phrases such as irresponsible lending and preying on the vulnerable to further denigrate the payday loans industry. • A Take on Filipino Identity

    Russell Lorenzo
    22 Sep 2014 | 9:07 am
The…
  • Women's Sexuality in the Old Philippines

Much has been said about the political and economic situation of the Old Philippines in the history books. There's been something written and published about the campaigns of the Spanish Conquistadors, the Missionaries, the Galleon Trade and the likes. History classes taught us all of these milestones but very briefly about the lifestyle and culture of ours during the different centuries of our history. One thing not readily available is sexuality. In the late 15th century, a certain historian and Jesuit priest, Pedro Chirino wrote about his stay in the country, as well as the behavior of our…

Photo from InquirerThe Philippine National Anthem today wasn't made to be the song to stir patriotism in the hearts of every Filipino. Its lyrics came from the poet Jose Palma and the arrangement came from Julian Felipe. Neither was it intentionally put together to be the National Anthem as Julian Felipe created his marching music in 1898 while Jose Palma made his poem in Spanish during 1899. Through the years after the revolution, while we were forming our identity, the current version was ratified and used ever since. There's a lot of fierceness, pride and passion in the words and music of…

There's the good side and the bad side, but what Anderson can't get out of his mind is the best of the Filipino People. Here's the video Anderson Cooper's report on CNN:When everything else is taken away, broken, battered, soaked, raw, stripped bare, you see things. Way back then, I belong to the call center industry. At the time when the aggressive growth of the BPO industry in the country was starting, I was an agent working to help finish off the last few months of college. To say that people in the call center behave differently than those who work in the regular office hours is an understatement. There is a different culture of Filipinos out there, and Shift is the first movie I've seen that "somehow" showed some light to the lives of individuals working in the BPO sector. The film centers at Estela (Yeng Constantino), a no-boyfriend-since-birth girl…

An absolute steal at Php250 a bag, these cookies from Charliekins (called chewies) are the best things ever. Each bag contains about 20 mini cookies (about an inch and a half in diameter) chock full of chocolate, with that chewy bite and texture Mrs. Fields was once famous for until they stopped caring. We always pass by this restaurant in White Plains whenever we go to our favorite spa, The Body Spa and Waxing Lounge (ahem), and never really gave it much thought until a week ago. Called Basil, it used to be one of those places which sold ornamental plants along White Plains, but which has since been converted into a beautiful Thai restaurant. We strongly recommend this place if you’re in the area and looking for good Thai food. The interiors are dark and lovely, with a small pond in the corner, candles, Thai-inspired decor, and a fairly intimidating wall of earth, roots and plants…

A popular tourist hub in Salcedo Village, Makati, the Salcedo Saturday Market is a small community market that pops up every Saturday in Jaime Velasquez Park. It’s also a great place to look for possible suppliers for food gifts this Christmas. We first stopped by Sonsi, The House of Longganisa, which is easily one of our favorite…

This piece was originally published here and is being re-published in The Manila Survival Guide with minor edits. It was with a peculiar, and perhaps less than noble, fixation that I read about your crime.  A crime which was extraordinarily morbid, and sensational.  And I gathered the following details: You were thirteen years old. You stole a .22 caliber pistol.  You wrote a suicide letter; short, but it got the message across.  You went to SM City Mall, Pampanga.  You met your seventeen year old lover in front of the Astrovision store in the mall’s Building 3.  You shot him in…
