Today, July 27, 2014, is the 100th founding anniversary of Iglesia ni Cristo, which is the largest religion founded by a Filipino, Felix Y. Manalo. To mark this milestone, I am featuring the site of the original temple of the church’s very first congregation in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila. This temple, built in 1937, is now a museum depicting the early years of the church. In Manalo’s honor, the street fronting the original temple was renamed after him. A view of the main musuem building as seen from Felix Manalo Street. Public domain photo on Wikimedia Commons It was in November 1913…

    15 Sep 2014 | 5:00 pm
In our July 25th editorial we asked if Vice President Jejomar Binay should be the next president of the Philippines. In this editorial we arrive at the definitive conclusion that that Binay should not be elected president. Since our last editorial, more witnesses have come forward with more allegations against the embattled Vice President. David also pointed out that Napoles paid for the schooling of at least 200 priests and helped construct many Catholic churches ...
  • Should President Aquino Get a Second Term as President?

    22 Aug 2014 | 5:00 pm
Many Filipinos today are realizing that the single, six-year presidential term as prescribed in the 1987 Constitution is woefully inadequate for a good president like Benigno S. Aquino III. The delegates who wrote that provision in the Constitution must have still been reeling from the almost 20 years of “kleptocratic” rule of strongman Ferdinand Marcos when they decided that one term was enough for any future Philippine president. Four years—the presidential term at the time—would be too short; eight too long. So the delegates must have all arrived at the happy medium of 6 years and…

China, instead of positioning itself as a 21st century superpower appears to be turning back the clock resembling more and more the 12th century empire of Genghis Khan and the Mongol hordes who conquered most of Eurasia...just because they could. Today's China it seems adheres to the philosophy that "might makes right." And since it has the biggest "guns" in the region it can do or take…

ABOUT THE Middle East and Libya many Filipinos have one fear, and that’s the loss of their jobs as the region and that country fall apart, besieged by the violence of contending sectarian groups and the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). That, together with paeans to their bravery, was the subtext in the expressions of concern over the Filipino peacekeepers’ repatriation last week from the Syrian Golan Heights, peacekeeping under UN auspices being, like other jobs in the Middle East, relatively high-paying at around P45,000 a month. In recent months, fighting in the flashpoints of Iraq,…

ABOUT Benigno Aquino III’s declaration in a TV5 interview that he would “listen to his bosses,” we can either (1) assume that it was his demure way of saying that he will indeed seek a second term, or (2) dismiss it as merely an attempt to allay the fears of his Liberal Party mates that, without him, they would have no winnable candidate in 2016 and would have to face the chilling prospect of not having anyone of their own in Malacañang for six years. In either case, it has triggered a contentious debate that could lead to consequences Mr. Aquino may not have anticipated. In reply to…

Then President Fidel Ramos signed Republic Act 7636, which repealed RA 1700, on September 22, 1992. When Arroyo and Palparan expressed their wish, the Anti-Subversion Act had been dead for nearly two decades. RA 1700 was enacted in 1957 to help defeat the Hukbong Mapagpalaya ng Bayan (People’s Liberation Army)—the…

    6 Sep 2014 | 12:39 pm
If Cape Bojeador Lighthouse guides ships on the northwestern corner of Luzon, then Cape Engaño Lighthouse (Wikipedia) is its metaphorical sibling, guiding ships on Luzon’s northeastern frontier. This Spanish-era lighthouse, built in 1888 and first used in 1892, sits atop a hill on the northernmost point of Palaui Island in Santa Ana, Cagayan. A ground-level view of the lighthouse building complex from the south. Touted as the longest bridge in Mindanao with a length of 907 meters, the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is one of the top tourist attractions in Butuan City with its raw and elegant design. Similar to the previously-featured Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge in Cebu, the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge except that it has a single tower instead of Fernan Bridge’s pair. I’m also guessing that Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is also the tallest bridge in Mindanao, if not the whole country. Silhouette of the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge’s tower and cables against the late afternoon…

To mark this milestone, I am featuring the site of the original temple of the church’s very first congregation in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila. This temple, built in 1937, is now a museum depicting the early years of the church. In Manalo’s honor, the street fronting the original temple was renamed after him. Built by the Augustinian Recollects in 1796, the watchtower served as a lookout against marauding pirates and Moros from Mindanao and was dedicated to St. Vincent Ferrer. Located as it is on Bohol’s prominent western point, which also serves as the westernmost point of Maribojoc, the watchtower provides an excellent view of the surrounding waters and of nearby Cebu and Siquijor. July was a good month for politicians who like nothing better than bashing the payday lenders. Not only did the Financial Conduct Authority introduce new regulations to limit the number of times a loan can be rolled over, proposals were also announced to cap the cost of a payday loan. But why are politicians and the press so quick to vilify the payday industry? Amidst the fanfare of July’s regulatory activity, the press was chock-full of choice phrases such as irresponsible lending and preying on the vulnerable to further denigrate the payday loans industry. Clearly this is nothing new,…

It means to neutralize the immediate threat coming towards you whether with a kick, punch, head-butt, knife or stick. Once the snake is defanged, the snake is deemed powerless and unable to defend itself. The Abanico and Gunting are staple techniques in Filipino Martial Arts that serves this purpose. Tasty tapas, captivating cocktails, and fabulous friends -- a recipe for an unforgettable evening. It was bound to be a night to remember. Good food and good company made sure of that. I was actually the first one to arrive at the scene. Scouting the lobby of Makati Shangri-La, my eyes finally locked in on tonight's venue: Sage Tapas Bar. Sage occupied two floors: the tapas bar was on the ground floor, and upstairs was its fine dining restaurant. The day was slowly coming down to a close as I was led past the bar and the wine corner, over to a sunken lounge section with a backdrop of a…

We decided to try this new organic restaurant in BF Homes, Parañaque -- The Urban Farm.Located along President's Avenue, near Tahanan Village, it is a fairly small space, but with ample lighting and garden-feel interiors of wood and greens. The lovely quotes painted on the walls are endearing, and dare I say fitting to what we were gathered for.Together with my husband, kids, parents,…

We always pass by this restaurant in White Plains whenever we go to our favorite spa, The Body Spa and Waxing Lounge (ahem), and never really gave it much thought until a week ago. Called Basil, it used to be one of those places which sold ornamental plants along White Plains, but which has since been converted into a beautiful Thai restaurant. We strongly recommend this place if you’re in the area and looking for good Thai food. The interiors are dark and lovely, with a small pond in the corner, candles, Thai-inspired decor, and a fairly intimidating wall of earth, roots and plants…

We always have a great time when we drop by the Salcedo Saturday Market, and this weekend was no exception. A popular tourist hub in Salcedo Village, Makati, the Salcedo Saturday Market is a small community market that pops up every Saturday in Jaime Velasquez Park. It has been around for about ten years, and offers a variety of treats for visitors. Items can be expensive though, but they are usually worth the cost. It’s also a great place to look for possible suppliers for food gifts this Christmas. We first stopped by Sonsi, The House of Longganisa, which is easily one of our favorite…

This piece was originally published here and is being re-published in The Manila Survival Guide with minor edits. It was with a peculiar, and perhaps less than noble, fixation that I read about your crime.  A crime which was extraordinarily morbid, and sensational.  And I gathered the following details: You were thirteen years old. You stole a .22 caliber pistol.  You wrote a suicide letter; short, but it got the message across.  You went to SM City Mall, Pampanga.  You met your seventeen year old lover in front of the Astrovision store in the mall’s Building 3.  You shot him in…
