HTC One: Sample Photos and Video
23 May 2013 | 7:07 pmHTC Philippines formally launched the HTC One last May 21 at the Hyve in The Fort. The release of the handsets are scheduled for today, May 24, in all HTC Concept Stores in Metro Manila. We managed to borrow a review unit just in time to get some sample photos and videos. The 4MP ultrapixel camera of the HTC One is probably one of the most controversial technology that HTC introduced in their flagship phone. It potentially has that same game-changing effect as Nokia’s 41MP PureView technology. So what we did was to take it to the streets and test it. Here are some sample photos we got:… -

East Asia's Appetite for Eels Pushing Species to the Brink
18 Apr 2013 | 8:50 pmIn Japan, summer is the season of eel. On the sweltering midsummer days between mid-July and early August, it's traditional to eat a plate of golden-brown broiled unagi kabayaki, or broiled eel. The popular dish is believed to help people stay healthy during the hot weather. But the tradition is now at risk. Skyrocketing demand for glass eels, once considered a highbrow delicacy, is pushing fishermen to exhaust the population and causing prices to soar. A number of East Asian countries including Japan have proposed ideas on how to preserve the wild eel, but there are so far no concrete… -

A lot of people use Google Translate to translate languages and dialects and the addition of Cebuano as a supported dialect is a very welcome update, especially for Filipinos. Why I Don't Like Going to Church on Sundays
21 May 2013 | 3:13 amImage from Seasite.niu.eduDon't get this article wrong. I am a former seminarian, a devout Catholic, a faithful of the Roman Catholic Church and knows very well what excommunication means. This is not to encourage anyone not to go to mass during Sundays, but a plea to take note of existing concerns. These are just observations of a Filipino layman experiencing the rite of the Holy Mass.Spanish conquistadors brought to the country Catholicism, which spread naturally as the colonial reach of Spain got established in the Philippines. These hundreds of years under the Spanish rule cultivated the… -
Philippine Flag History
7 Apr 2013 | 9:56 amFrom HopeandFail.com"Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y tagumpay na nagniningning. Ang bituin at araw niya kailan pa ma'y di magdidilim."These are the translated words of Jose Palma, a poet and soldier, to be rendered in accordance with the musical composition of Julian Felipe. The verse talks about the symbols of the Philippine Flag, and what it should represent for every Filipino. Should. Our nation's flag tells everyone a story, which has been a part of our school's curriculum since the primary education stages. We've grown so used to it that many might have taken it for granted, thus forgotten or… -
Jose Abad Santos. A Filipino Hero.
10 Feb 2013 | 9:29 am"Do not cry, Pepito, show to these people that you are brave. It is an honor to die for one's country. Not everybody has that chance."Those were the last words of a man to his son, about to be executed during the Japanese occupation here in the Philippines. He was the acting President of the Philippines before his capture and his refusal to cooperate earned him martyrdom for the country. His name is Jose Abad Santos. His face has been immortalized in the 1,000 pesos bill along with 2 other heroes, but his story isn't known to many. Abad Santos was a man who achieved great things in a time of… -
A Taste of Filipino Cigarettes
6 Jan 2013 | 8:47 amFinally, after quite a long wait, more than a year after posting Chasing Filipino Cigarettes, I've managed to get hold of Filipino Cigarettes. It took a trip to the central market of Gapan, Nueva Ecija to get these because they're not available here in Metro Manila. A previous discussion with the makers of these cigarettes didn't really help much, to which they suggested to go to Tarlac to buy their products. Each pack contains 30 cigarillos, no filters unlike the more popular American Blended ones. Their packaging, wrapped in printed paper, much like the way it was done before during the late… -
Anting-anting Making in Mount Banahaw
4 Jan 2013 | 11:49 pmAnting-anting are among the most sought after mystical objects here in the Philippines during the time of our forefathers, that still persist even today. Deeply embedded in the Filipino culture is the belief in talismans or amulets, rooted from the religious tendency and piety of Pinoys. Since the time of our ancestors, men and women have been searching for various anting-anting, while some have been making these. An encounter with a maker of anting-anting at the foot of Mount Banahaw gave more insights on how these things work. His name had been attached with "ukit" (meaning carve) because of…

Le Petit Chéri: A Darling French Place at Molito, Alabang
21 May 2013 | 6:33 amI believe having a little lunch by yourself every now and then is healthy for one's soul, oui? I'm on a constant lookout for happy places, places---usually restaurants, cafés or bookstores---where I find comfort and contentment (apart from my home) even for a couple of hours. Usually these spots have a serene and relaxing atmosphere, serve coffee, and don't make me feel like I have to leave right away. Books are a plus, albeit I have my own personal library in my Note 2, so I'm not so worried. Living in the South, I would always pass by and notice Le Petit Chéri whenever I'm in the… -
Great Shawarma by Shawarma Guys at The Fort Strip
17 May 2013 | 6:28 amIn the mood for some shawarma... When I was about to go to BGC a couple of weeks back, I asked my husband if he wanted something from there. He told me he wanted some food, something for an afternoon snack. I immediately thought about Shawarma Guys, and how many of my friends were raving about it. I was pretty familiar with its location since I already saw it before, when I dined at the Early Bird Breakfast Club, which was just a stone's throw away. The place was pretty big for a shawarma joint, but I heard it could get pretty crowded at night; hence, maybe the need for such space. Good thing… -
There's No Gelato Like Bono!
14 May 2013 | 6:42 amI don't even remember having this good a gelato in Firenze. Admittedly, that was more than a decade ago, and my palate wasn't developed in even the most remote sense, so comparing it might be meaningless. But, this I know for sure: Bono makes the best gelato I have ever tasted in my whole adulthood memory, and granted I haven't tried every single one in the country, I've still had my share. It was a surprise to find out Bono's location---SM Makati---considering the premium products they're selling. One would usually assume such artisanal shops to be located in the likes of Greenbelt,… -
FRM Bites: Mickey and Minnie Mouse @ Krispy Kreme
11 May 2013 | 5:12 amIt's the Mickey Mouse doughnut house, come inside, it's fun inside... (sorry, couldn't resist). My daughter adores Minnie Mouse. She gets all excited at the sight of anything Minnie (or even Mickey) -- toys, clothes, shoes, accessories, books and even food! Naturally, when I saw Krispy Kreme offering Mickey and Minnie-shaped doughnuts, I just had to buy them. I ordered a box of six and got the Bubblegum (blue); Powdered Iced Filled which had the powdered sugar in the shape of Mickey's face; Cotton Candy (pink); Dark Chocolate with Minnie's… -
Conti's: South's Pride and Joy
8 May 2013 | 4:37 amGreat comfort food born from the South... It's been far too long since I've last dined in at Conti's. Sometimes, being a food blogger means that you tend to eat at restaurants you haven't tried yet; ergo, less chances of eating at your "usuals". So one time, while waiting for my daughter to finish with her workshop classes, I snagged the opportunity to revisit one of my favorite comfort food places. I distinctly remember how my family used to spend weekends having lunch or dinner at Dates and Nuts, a small, popular restaurant in BF Homes, famous for its lasagna, roast beef, and frothy iced…
