TONDO is in the popular mind Manila’s workers’ district, although some sociologists point out, as they did when Manuel Villar was running for President in 2010 and hoping to win by passing himself off as poor, that it has never been all-proletarian, being home also to professionals and small traders. The myth persists, however, and Tondo-born Andres Bonifacio, whose birth the Philippines marks every November 30th with a holiday, is traditionally referred to as the country’s working-class hero. Last Friday, on a suppose to be busy day for the Metro the guys at Ford Philippines invited us for a Lunch Break to Tagaytay to get a hands-on experience on the all-new Ford Fiesta S. We all converged to Ford at Fort Bonifacio at 10:00AM, five of us bloggers were greeted by five different colors of Fiesta S. DigitalSpidey was privileged to take the wheel of the Chilli Orange. (This color is only available on the 1.6 5-door top-of-the-line model.)  It was a convoy of five Ford Fiesta S, a real head turner in the highway! fruity
    23 Jan 2012 | 7:35 pm
Breakfast, served. French toast or in French, "pain perdu" which literally means "lost bread" since it's better made with day-old stale bread than fresh. And a side of... unrelenting farce.Apparently, a dear reader (possibly an imaginary person - one can never really be certain in the virtual world of blarghing and aliases) has grown weary of my "fruity oaty" references. He commented, "FRUIT-OAT-GAH, unrelenting farce?" AWESOME. My day isn't complete until I've irked someone to the point of exhaustion. (Hmm... I miss smilies in my blargh.) Anyhoo, I woke up super early today and felt like…

I was walking along Queen Street West in T.O. when I spotted the world's BEST pound for pound fighter inside a shop window. Manny Pacquiao, looking as pretty ugly as ever, clad in a red hoodie underneath his $100 Nike Sportswear N98 Track Jacket. The fact that I was wearing my fave old worn-out Gap red hoodie, looking as ugly poor as ever, at the time was purely coincidental. LOL. (Quickie post shorter than "King Rides By" song by Cat Power.)A persistently persistent pal o' mine (pantomime?) dropped an MP3 into my full Dropbox. Last December, Chan Marshall aka Cat Power released a new version…

The US Supreme Court in Nixon v. United States, 506 U.S. 224 (1993) (where the House of Representatives adopted articles of impeachment against petitioner Walter Nixon, the Chief Judge of a Federal District Court, and presented to the Senate) has explained the non-justiciability of the impeachment (because the matter involved a political question) in this manner: Judicial involvement in impeachment proceedings, even if only for purposes of judicial review, is counterintuitive, because it would eviscerate the “important constitutional check” placed on the Judiciary by the Framers…

It is generally conceded that impeachment is more of a political than a legal process. However, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), supposedly the official organization of lawyers in the Philippines, has issued a statement raising an interesting legalistic claim regarding the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona. The statement argues that while the impeachment process itself against Corona is legal, some of the grounds relied on, particularly those which question the opinions of the justices applying the Constitution in actual cases, constitute an assault on the judiciary…

To one looking at the broader picture of the travel ban against former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, sans the witting or unwitting shortcomings of the key characters from all sides, it may be reasonable to assume that the question of great commonsensical importance may inevitably boil down to: Who among these players is actually acting honorably, honestly and in fair play? The obtaining facts tell us that the adjudicatory phase of the criminal cases against Arroyo including electoral sabotage, plunder and other high crimes of graft and corruptions had been well approaching when she…

An earlier attempt to impeach the Ombudsman during the Arroyo administration did not gain any traction in the House of Representatives, the agency with the sole power to initiate the proceeding, dominated then by Arroyo party mates. The idea of elephants wearing contact lenses may seem absurd at first. But when their vision has clouded to the point of total impairment, people find strange ways to help them get better. Take for example the case of Win Thida, a 45-year-old Asian elephant living in Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo. Her cornea was badly injured during a scuffle with her jumbo pals so a veterinarian decided to put a contact lens over the patient’s eye. The operation is delicate and requires special training for veterinarians. Vet Anne-Marie Verbruggen, who had only ever put contact lenses into horses, had to use a…

The video below has been making the rounds (we picked it up off Daily Picks and Flicks), showing Slovakian violist Lukas Kmit performing at a Jewish Orthodox synagogue in Presov. Kmit was playing a beautiful piece on his viola when the all-too-familiar Nokia ringtone interrupted his recital. The musician paused for a while, smiled and then continued his performance with an improvised version of the world’s most famous ringtone, to the delight of an audience who broke into applause. At first, I thought the video was a lame attempt at viral marketing by the Finnish telecommunications giant.
