If, as CNN was reporting last week, some Haitians resent the presence of US troops in their country, it’s because US troops have been in Haiti before: in 1857, 1859, 1868, 1869, 1876, 1888, 1892, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911, 1912 and 1913. Apparently not satisfied with just shocking and awing the Haitians with periodic displays of force to remind them who really ruled the Americas, the US also occupied Haiti in 1915, leaving the country only in 1934. It hasn’t exactly been clear what US interests in Haiti are, apart from the political one of keeping everyone in the US…

Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States and the first black to assume that post on January 20, 2009. He was elected in November 2008 on a tide of hopeful support both at home and abroad. Both at home and abroad, many people thought that his term would be unlike that of his predecessor’s, and that, on the contrary, it would address and bring to a satisfying close some of the issues that had haunted the US for eight years, including the war of several fronts the fight against terrorism had become. The hopes were understandable. The US economy was in shambles, with jobs…

It may have an ample supply of people with single-digit IQs and pronunciation problems. But the Arroyo regime has a genius for using Filipino misfortunes to its advantage. When the Maguindanao massacre of 57 people including at least 30 journalists and media workers outraged the country and the world, then spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo admitted, and what’s more reaffirmed, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s continuing friendship with the suspected masterminds. But the less imprudent voices from Malacanang made it appear that Mrs. Arroyo had absolutely nothing to do with the Ampatuans. The ruling…

Gary Olivar, oddly enough while defending his boss’ non-attendance at the joint session of Congress last week that was supposed to review Presidential Proclamation 1959, let slip last Thursday (December 10) what he really thought about the declaration of martial law in Maguindanao. One of the few Arroyo officials with at least half a brain, Olivar was explaining to the media why Mrs. Gloria Macapagal chose to attend to her other appointments last Wednesday (December 9) rather than show herself in Congress. Olivar harrumphed that neither the representatives of the people nor the senators of…

Our latest story, written by senior journalist and Mindanao expert Carolyn Arguillas, details the candidacy of 10 of the 12  Ampatuan clan members who have been implicated as respondents or conspirators in the November 23, 2009 Maguindanao massacre. The report is part of a continuing series of reporting projects in Maguindanao being conducted by the PCIJ and MindaNews, an independent media organization based out of Davao City.

The Correspondent, the magazine of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Hong Kong, featured the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) in its January-February 2010 issue. The report by Jonathan Sharp focused on the impact of the PCIJ’s efforts: “Among the notable scalps of the PCIJ’s investigative reporting has been ex-president Joseph Estrada, who was deposed in 2001 after it was revealed he had helped himself to the nation’s wealth. The PCIJ’s reports were used as evidence in his impeachment hearings and the later trials found him guilty. Current President Gloria…

The second part of our series on the Guns of Maguindanao talks about the relationship between the Ampatuan family and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and how warlordism in Central Mindanao thrives. Andal Ampatuan Sr., the family patriarch, had successfully parlayed his role as government’s chief ally against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) into a highly influential and profitable political empire that now spans the breadth of Central Mindanao, using the traditional Moro structures of authority and royalty for his own ends. Warlordism and ‘datuism’, meanwhile, continued to…

I thought Filipinos are now united and truly care for each other after Bagyong Undoy (Undoy Storm), but I was wrong. Where I’m from, everyone’s not really a hero. I was so confident and felt like I was still in Singapore, and maybe that’s why I ceased to have my beloved wallet now because I didn’t mind about the impending monster that will swallow my wallet into oblivion. I really blame myself for being so negligent while entering the train inside Gil Puyat LRT station last week. Still, I am hoping that this cunning snatcher will, by any chance, Google my name and read this blog post.

There’s this small village-like place in Puerto Princesa where a lot of people, especially kids and high-school students, go to every afternoon. It’s called the Baker’s Hill and it literally sits on top of a hill overlooking the city. The place is really nice and it’s like a small theme park. Even at the entrance, you will be greeted will a nice smell of freshly baked bread. The owner of the place built a small mansion on the front of the…

Kutang San Diego (Fort San Diego) is a really small fort built by the Franciscans in in the town proper of Gumaca, Quezon in the latter part of the 18th century. This fort, equipped with at least one canon (shown below), is meant to repel sea pirates from Lamon Bay that often plundered coastal towns in the Philippines during that era. But given the size of the fort, I’m pretty sure that marauders can easily overpower this fort with sheer number. While I believe that your significant other should be sweet and romantic all-year-round, it is kinda nice to receive something extra on Valentine’s Day – especially with all the special edition Valentine’s Day stuff stores are coming up with! I don’t know about you, but I’d take chocolate and cake over flowers any day, especially if they’re as delightful as these new delicacies from Red Ribbon. It would be a real travesty to deny your love a cake as decadent as the new Red Ribbon Chocolate Heaven. The top layer is made of rich chocolate truffle, which rests…

Sometimes I wish that eating were optional. It’s not that I want to get skinny (although that’s always a good thing); it’s because I find it so inconvenient to eat when I’m busy. Some people overeat when they’re stressed, but I’m the kind of person who loses her appetite when she’s too consumed by her work. When I eventually remember that it’s been hours since my last meal, I’m either too busy to stop working and eat, or it’s 2 in the morning and I’m battling insomnia. Saturday was one of those days – I went out with an…

After our filling Thai dinner at Oody’s, my boyfriend and I wandered off to find dessert. We’re both huge dessert fiends who like our post-dinner sweets gooey, rich, and chocolatey. Although it’s normally not difficult for us to find a cozy coffee shop to settle down and stuff ourselves silly, we did have a fairly heavy dinner and could only eat a light-ish dessert. It took a little bit of walking around Greenbelt for inspiration to strike – the last time we were here, we passed by the relocated Max Brenner on our way to a movie. I remember telling Marco how relieved I…

    24 Jan 2010 | 10:52 pm
When I was in high school and Market! Market! was still a new mall, I used to drag my parents to Oody’s for Thai food. Their affordable prices (around P150-200 per person), fast service, and excellent food made Oody’s one of my favorite restaurants of all time, and I was brokenhearted to learn that the one at Market! Market! closed down for some reason. It’s been years since I last ate at Oody’s and while I always passed by the one at Greenbelt 3, I never had the chance to go in and revisit it. Last Saturday, however, my boyfriend and I finally got around to dining at…

These voters will be organized into 329, 389 voting precincts organized further into 75,471 clustered precincts in 37,226 voting centers. The Comelec expects a relatively high voter turnout—80 percent or 40.5 million voters. There was no pilfering, or looting, of relief goods in DSWD warehouses: something of an achievement considering the low standards of…

Of all the the Presidential Candidates, none have gone the way that I had hoped when it comes to House Bill 5043, or more popularly known as The Reproductive Health Bill (RH Bill), they have seen the might of the church and have cowered. They are the leaders that can do the political math, but lack the political will. In a previous presidency, two pension funds administered by the government were used to augment private capital employed to raid a private universal bank. Last December frontman Zack de la Rocha and guitarist Tom Morello made a promise that if their song “Killing In The Name” makes it to the Christmas number one slot, they will play a free UK concert. Rage Against The Machine won the chart battle for Britain’s Christmas number one singles with the re-release of their 1992 track against The X Factor frontrunner Joe McElderry’s “The Climb”— breaking the trend of number one songs by the show’s winners. The so called “anti-corporate campaign” is backed up and started by Facebook fans to end the winning streak…

Ready for a Facebook- and Twitter-like Gmail? It seems like not even search engine giant Google is immune to the social networking bug. Reports said Google is set to unveil a new and improved Gmail as early as this week. The changes will give Gmail the capability to allow users to share videos and photos, as well as post status updates very much like what one can do on Facebook and Twitter. Under Google’s plan, Gmail will have a new module where status updates from people included in a person’s network would appear. The same concept is used by Facebook and Twitter. Google had…

True enough, blogs can help generate business for your company. That is, however, provided that you know what you’re doing with your blog. It’s funny, but a lot of people get too caught up on providing unique content that they lose sight at the one thing that their blog is supposed to do for their business – to spark interest in the services their company offers. One good thing to remember is: you’re blogging to give your business a little boost. So you have content to share and tips to give out to your readers, now what? What is it exactly that you’re trying to…

Twitter is one of the most popular social media channels through which business owners share information and make announcements to their followers. But sometimes, having to come back every so often to repost a tweet announcement or share links can be inconvenient, especially if you have other things to attend to. Well, you have the option to choose to post your announcement every 5 minutes while you’re still online or flood the timeline by posting dozens of links in one go, but that would be considered spamming. And you don’t want to be called a spammer. That’s definitely a…

It’s that time of year again in the United States where 2 teams will battle in the championship. The NFL awarded the 2010 Super Bowl — Super Bowl XLIV to Miami and the championship game will be played February 7, 2010 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens. Though I’m not really a die-hard fan of the NFL, I love seeing awesome ads and TVC during the game. I’ve been looking at these since 2005 and learn a lot of concepts from the creatives that produced them and most of all, the idea behind the commercial. I just want to share to you guys this widget which shows real-time ads…

This is the reason for the recall,” Ty explained. Ty said they have received some inquiries from…
