Philippines: Dita Tree saved 36 lives during floods

The flashflood was caused by a record rainfall unleashed by Typhoon Ketsana which hit the Philippines last September. It was the worst flooding in the country in the past 40 years. There are only few Dita Trees left in urban Metro Manila. Barangay Bagong Silangan is an urban poor community located in the northeastern part of the country’s capital. More than 30 individuals died in this community during the flooding… -

Leptospirosis outbreak in the Philippines
1 Nov 2009 | 1:46 am“We have also already sent an SOS to the international community because this is the one of the biggest outbreaks not just in the Philippines but in the world…” This was the statement of Philippine Heath Secretary Francisco Duque III who announced a Leptospirosis outbreak in the flood-affected areas of the Philippines. More than 30 towns are still submerged in floodwaters one month after two strong typhoons hit the country’s capital and nearby provinces. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection affecting both humans and animals. It is acquired through direct contact with the… -
Disaster Management and the role of ICTs
27 Oct 2009 | 3:39 pmWhat is disaster management? What are the various stages that it involves? The terminology may differ depending on where you are. In New Zealand, for example, you would be talking of the 4R’s, namely Readiness, Response, Recovery and Reduction. In other places, such as India, it could be as outlined in the graphic below: Whatever the terminology, today it is an undeniable truth that the need of the hour is effective disaster management and preparation for a growing incidence, worldwide, of different forms of natural disasters. In a series of posts, we shall trace and examine the increasing… -

Law abiding and lawless
30 Oct 2009 | 5:00 amA conference among lawyers and journalists from several Asian countries including the Philippines is concluding in Cebu. Sponsored by the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) through the London-based Open Society Institute, it is the second gathering of its kind. The first was held in Hongkong two years ago and examined the legal environments in the varied legal and political contexts in which journalists have to function in Asia. The Cebu meeting has been looking into, among other topics, the ways in which lawyers and journalists have been cooperating to defend and advance free expression… -
The trapo mind
23 Oct 2009 | 7:23 amAfter living through three bad weeks, while on the way to a speaking engagement outside Manila it was my misfortune to be in the company of a local politician whose sentiments were firmly with the current national administration. The normally one hour trip turned into two and a half hours because, over the protests of the vehicle driver, he insisted that we use a route other than that which most travelers to our destination know has cut travel time by half. That gave him a captive audience of three (there was one other passenger, in addition to the driver), and he made free with his opinions… -
Media and disasters
16 Oct 2009 | 7:13 amMany media organizations are involved in relief operations, and there’s no question that their efforts are helping alleviate the humanitarian crisis the floods and landslides have created. No one so far has argued that the media should keep solely to their primary responsibility, which is that of reporting and interpreting events of public significance. The crisis is after all of such proportions, and the government capacity to deal with it so limited, that the people and the communities affected need all the help they can get. Media involvement in relief operations is also consistent with… -
The failing state
9 Oct 2009 | 7:20 amDespite the usual lament that they’re too dependent on the government, Filipinos especially the poor don’t run to the government when they need help; they call on the media first, whether as intermediaries with this or that agency, or as themselves the provider of solutions to their problems. This is markedly evident in broadcasting, where “public service” programs proliferate and rate. The need for these programs is driven by the increasing failure of public institutions to provide the many services that people need, such as police protection from violence, garbage collection, and,… -
Disaster zone
2 Oct 2009 | 7:06 amIt’s a convenient excuse government big shots trot out during disasters to placate those who can’t understand why they’re getting no relief from hunger, thirst and cold, whose very lives are under threat during earthquakes, fires, mudslides and floods, or who have actually seen their children, parents and other kin drown in flood waters or burn in a house on fire. Mostly these bosses blame God, declaring that against natural disasters mere human beings contend in vain. The September 27-28 floods and the misery they once more subjected Filipinos was one more occasion for the same excuse.

Filipinos - Repent!
2 Oct 2009 | 12:09 amIt's time for you to hear that there's a great God who knows and sees everything - a great God who knows your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Beware liars: there's a judgment waiting for every person who lies and that liars will be thrown to the hellfire. Who will judge? The Holy and True God!You said that you're just a man - but think about yourself as a sinner and that your sin came from the devil - that's because you don't fear and believe in God. Don't be dumb or conceited because there's a judgment waiting for our sins. Lord Jesus is the Saviour and He can forgive sins, but He is also… -

8 Nov 2009 | 9:21 pmTHE CLOCK is ticking fast, and the Senators are now facing judgment: Are they champions of the people’s right to know? The Senators have only 23 session days left before they adjourn for the May 2010 elections to pass their version of the Freedom of Information Act, a law that has been promised 22 years ago by the 1987 Constitution. Senate Bill 3308 finally entered its period of interpellation last month, a full seventeen months after the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading its counterpart legislation, House Bill 3732. Failure by the Senators to act on SB 3308… -
Who gives a care about healthcare?

The emcees had to correct themselves a couple of times that the event was a ‘declaration,’ not a proclamation, rally for the candidacies of the president who was ousted for plunder and perjury, and the outgoing mayor of Makati City. -

What is an Influential Blogger?
16 Oct 2009 | 11:41 amJust what kind of a person is an influential blogger? Let’s start by eliminating current and shallow yardsticks on what truly defines an influential blogger. In my experience, an influential blogger is not solely shaped by the obvious metrics we usually associate it with. An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of subscribers and readers. An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of comments from each blog post. An influential blogger is not the one who has the highest average daily earnings from various blog advertising networks. An influential… -

Buona Vita Ristorante Italiano
10 Nov 2009 | 5:43 pmBuona Vita is probably the only restaurant worth visiting along the Daang Hari area. This is the alternative road that connects Alabang to Tagaytay. It is located across the Verdana community in Daang Hari and probably the best Italian restaurant in that part of town. We love their pizzas and the unique gelato flavor! As for the pasta, we tried the ravioli and it was obvious that it was prepared beforehand and reheated. The Ravioli place in the Robinson's Galleria food court is much better because it is made fresh on the day itself. I was expecting the prices to be more affordable but it… -

White Island (Camiguin)
1 Nov 2009 | 7:33 pmOne of the most popular tourist attractions in the Mindanao island of Camiguin is Medano Islet, popularly known as White Island. This island is actually just a sandbar with fine white sand (hence the name) and its shape changes with the constantly-shifting currents. In fact, what you can see in the high-res satellite imagery (and in the thumbnail) are two curves forming a sort of McDo-style ‘M’. Zoom out in Google Maps until you see the default low-resolution Landsat satellite imagery and you can now see a large inverted ‘C’. White Island is located off the coast of… -

Blog Action Day is a collective action among the world’s bloggers to talk about one important topic on October 15 of every year. For 2009, the topic is climate change. This is a timely topic since Typhoon Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng recently ravaged the Philippines with record-breaking (and heart-breaking) effects, which many meteorologists and scientists are attributing to climate change. In addition, the world’s leaders will be meeting in Copenhagen to discuss this topic, so collective voices are… -

The main campus of the university is in downtown Zamboanga City while the Tumaga Campus, which houses the High School, is located further upland. The University was founded in 1912, making it the second oldest Jesuit school in the Philippines after the Ateneo de Manila University. It started as the Escuela Catolica before being renamed as the Ateneo de Zamboanga in 1916. -

I think tricycles and/or jeepneys can also take you to the city proper of Lucena about 2 km to the south. Photo by Lucentino over at SkyscraperCity forums. The terminal also contains…

Filipino Kids & Their Lifestyle in 2009

Google-STI Business Stimulus Package
3 Nov 2009 | 7:32 amGoogle, in partnership with STI, are offering a unique opportunity for businesses to promote their products and services online through the Philippine Business Stimulus Package. During these trying times, businesses may find it difficult to attract potential clients, be it offline or online. Online, Google takes care of that by offering a hefty P2,000 credit on Google Adwords. I’ve only seen P1,000 Adword credits being given away before and I was quite pleased to see them up the ante to P2,000. For businesses who have no online presence, STI can do the job for them for only P3,000. But… -

MB in Hong Kong
11 Nov 2009 | 5:52 amBlogFest.Asia, the first-ever pan-Asia bloggers’ conference, became a venue for introducing the Mindanao Bloggers Community to the world. Put together by the DotAsia Organisation (the registrar for .asia domain names) in Hong Kong from 6 to 8 November 2009, 3 Filipinos were present at BlogFest.Asia to provide the audience with primers on the Philippine blogosphere. (Actually there were 4 Filipinos there, but the fourth one was invited as the representative of Creative Commons – Asia.) It was the experience of Mindanao’s bloggers, however, that really got the attention of… -
The 3rd Summit
29 Oct 2009 | 2:30 pmThe 3rd Mindanao Bloggers Summit, held in Cagayan de Oro City last 24 October 2009, despite a rather poor showing in the number of participants, was another feather in the cap of the MB Community. The CDO Bloggers group displayed their cohesiveness and enthusiasm and unfailing energy to pull off the event quite admirably. The highlight of this year’s Summit was the involvement of the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy, Ms. Leslie Bassett, who delivered an eye-opening and inspiring presentation about the contributions her government has made to the progress of Mindanao. -
The bloggers of Zamboanga
20 Oct 2009 | 10:58 pmI was very happy to have visited — at long last! — Asia’s Latin City (from 17 to 20 October), and to have touched base with the bloggers of Zamboanga. I’d already met some of them online (and two of them ‘offline’ during the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit last year), but seeing them all together in their own milieu was most gratifying. The Zambo bloggers started becoming active and participatory in the Mindanao Bloggers Community around last year. They even sent tentative feelers to the MB core group as to the possibility of their hosting MBS3. This is a… -
Mindanaoan Artist in Lexicon of Surrealism
15 Oct 2009 | 4:31 amAt a time when Manila is rocked by controversies surrounding the questionable declaration of some personalities as National Artists, a Davao-born art talent quietly carved a niche among history’s greatest surrealists. His stuttering childlike speech, incompatible with his towering 6-foot height, sometimes amuses people. But today, Bienvenido Banez, Jr., towers all the more for achievements uncommon among Filipino artists. Diagnosed with mild learning disability during childhood, Ben’s focus of attention has always been his art. Rightly so. In 2002, he won first place in the Asian… -
Blogging for peace initiative
10 Oct 2009 | 8:24 amThe Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), through its Southeast Asian regional secretariat, Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), has launched a worthy program that is very much in line with what the Mindanao Bloggers Community stands for: iBlogforPeace. “iBlogforPeace seeks to broaden the discourse on peace by providing an online platform for civil society, particularly the unorganized and the bloggers community, to take part in the conversations in their own contexts and engage in dialogues with kindred individuals and groups such as peace advocates.

Alli Orlistat: A Weight-Loss Pill that Won’t Kill You
10 Nov 2009 | 8:53 pmIf only losing weight were as easy as taking a pill. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way; while you could lose weight quickly using dubious diet pills, effective weight loss requires dietary modifications and a lifestyle change (more exercise). However, I discovered that there is a diet pill out there that can help you lose weight without killing you. Alli Orlistat is a weight-loss aid that will help you lose weight more efficiently – for every 2 pounds you lose, Orlistat can help you lose one more. The capsule should be taken three times a day, once during or after each meal… -
Maayad Organic Corn Coffee
8 Nov 2009 | 11:41 pmBack in World War II, Filipinos used roasted corn kernels as a substitute for coffee when coffee bean farming was disrupted by the Japanese occupation. Today, corn coffee is served as a specialty drink in Filipino-themed cafes as a caffeine-free alternative to coffee. The first time I had corn coffee was at Rafa’s in Xavierville Ave, and if I didn’t know it was made of corn kernels I wouldn’t have guessed it wasn’t “real” coffee. It tasted just as sharp and strong as coffee made from coffee beans! I haven’t gotten around to drinking corn coffee since,… -
New Selecta Gold Label Flavor: Vanilla Almond
8 Nov 2009 | 10:35 pmRemember the Selecta Gold Label ice cream flavors that were released this summer? For those of you who haven’t heard of it, the Selecta Gold Series is created by Selecta and Manila’s finest chefs to satisfy discriminating palates without breaking one’s budget. I love bingeing on those from time to time, particularly the Hazelnut Brownie one. But the fourth Gold Label flavor is fast becoming another favorite. That’s right – there’s a luxurious addition that came out just this month. Vanilla Almond is the masterpiece of Chef Ariel Manuel of Lolo Dad’s… -

Steve Schertzer, esl_steve@excite.com October 15, 2009 Disclaimer: The following is an opinion piece based on fact. — “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing; to know in their hearts and see the evils going on around them, but to sit back and let it unfold whether out of fear, apathy or both.” —Edmund Burke, Irish Political Philosopher. Realizations from the Water: A Pinay’s Chronicle on Typhoon Ondoy
15 Oct 2009 | 6:47 pmExperiences make you realize. Believing makes you value. Marikenya My family, my friends, and I, are still in awe and in great trauma from what we experienced from Ondoy and his wrath. There are so many stories, mostly, unpleasant ones. But now that all my family and friends are safe from the flood, I wanted to focus on the lessons I learned from the calamity that stunned the whole Metro Manila. Realizations from the Water: In the midst of hopelessness, no one can save us but God. Prayers remained the best and the only option we have to survive. My prayers were answered. We lost almost… -

My morning was busy since it was the middle of the school week and breakfast started extra early. I was ready to head for the train station (the cinema is located in another city) when I remembered that my trusty ol' bicycle was used by one of the boys. Yipes! I am not going to run in my boots! So I breathed deeply and walked briskly to the train station. Thoughts of my missing the train creeped into my brain and the only way I could… -

4 Nov 2009 | 8:47 pmThe Long View A wedge of Chiz By Manuel L. Quezon III Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 23:49:00 11/04/2009 IN JAKARTA OVER THE WEEKEND, I discovered that a famous political saying from the Philippines enjoys wide currency particularly within the circle of President Sudhuyono: “My loyalty to my party ends where my loyalty to my country begins.” The phrase dates back to 1922 when public opinion became a factor in elections and it summarizes the recent decision of Francis Escudero to renounce his party affiliation and to adopt—in fact, reintroduce—a proposal first made in 1940,… -

28 Oct 2009 | 6:53 pmThe Long View Inheritance battle before Supreme Court By Manuel L. Quezon III Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 00:04:00 10/29/2009 Senator Benigno Aquino III, together with Mayor Jesse Robredo, filed two days ago a petition before the Supreme Court—to nullify the law creating a new congressional district in Camarines Sur. 25 Oct 2009 | 10:53 amThe Long View In defense of Esperanza Cabral By Manuel L. Quezon III Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 00:49:00 10/26/2009 Is criticism tantamount to subversion, and is asking questions treason? Opinion ends up deeply divided on these matters during times of national emergency or crisis. Two examples will suffice. In the frantic days immediately after Typhoon “Ondoy,” there were instances in which Richard Gordon was criticized because Red Cross volunteers were kept waiting for what turned out to be a photo opportunity that never took place, because Gordon didn’t turn up. Gordon is… -

When I first posted this entry, the site had vanished, but the entry had been preserved in Google’s cache; now the site is back up. Over at the Multiply site of Jenny Epperson you can find the entry reproduced as well. I once thought that election day must be the day we decide who we we vote for. That the lines ought to be drawn by then. Seriously, it is a good plan as any, right? Heady Lies and More Lice
7 Nov 2009 | 1:48 amIn previous administrations, for decades the problems faced by the Department of Education (DepEd) had come like clockwork. The public could almost set their calendar based on its regularity. There were very little variations save for the calendar year. Perpetually short of funds despite constitutional priorities, classroom shortage was a constant curse. Moreover, public school officials snuck-in and charged incremental fees effectively bloating the cost of education despite statutory limits. Perhaps its most institutionally heartrending involves the perennially unsung. Simply look at the…

Stir Fried Broccoli with Oyster Sauce
11 Nov 2009 | 1:58 pmWok stir-fried broccoli with oyster sauce has to be one of my all-time favorite vegetable dishes. I could eat this once a week! If I have been particularly bad and consumed a phenomenal amount of fat-laden dishes in a given period, I try to detox with a lot of veggies, and this is almost always one of the dishes I rely upon to even out the evil with the good. When I worked in New York in the early 1990's, I used to order Chinese take out at least once a week, and my two white wax-lined cardboard boxes would almost ALWAYS contain shredded szechuan beef and an order of broccoli with oyster… -
Tablea Brownies a la Mary Ann Aboitiz-Arculli
10 Nov 2009 | 8:01 pmWhen I got my copy of Martinis & Aprons, I bookmarked several recipes that I found interesting, including this recipe for tablea brownies. I have made a LOT of brownies in my 30+ years of baking and always relied on Bakers Unsweetened Chocolate as the base for those brownies. I suppose I should have thought to experiment with tablea sooner, but didn't. So how did they turn out? Just look at them! They were surprisingly good! And the chocolate, while less intensely chocolately and slightly less dark, was a pretty darned good option at say 1/3 the price. And I already used the most… -

But before I go further, you should know that ALL of the proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the Holy Family Home Makati Foundation, a sanctuary run by Capuchin Tertiary Sisters for abandoned and neglected girls. THAT is precisely the reason why Marketman contributed… -
Pan de Sisig a la Marketman
8 Nov 2009 | 9:50 pmDeadly. In a wickedly good way. Do not attempt this when you are particularly hungry, like a half hour before lunch, as you will eat far more than you should. After the Zubuchonwich experiments, we just HAD to test a Pan de Sisig. OMG, why hasn't anyone else done this before? Or have I somehow missed this wonderful concoction that we just tried hours ago and instantly fell in love with?

Innovations and new tools appear and people are looking for ways to augments these to their current business process. How To Use Twitter List
10 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amYou’ve probably noticed that tiny note up at the top of your Twitter page saying that you can now create lists to better sort your update streams. It’s actually a pretty handy thing, that list function. I previously wrote something about organizing Twitter update streams here and here. The tools mentioned in those posts were really helpful, however they required the use of a 3rd party application or website to do group updates. Now, thanks to Twitters list function, you can make following a certain group easier than ever. When you make a list, you pretty much group your friends… -

Community, Conversation and Collaboration
8 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amWith all the hype about social media being the new “it” thing for marketing, more and more people are losing sight of what social media really is. Nowadays, people think of jumping onto the social media bandwagon for the money they can get out of the time they invest in the different social media sites out there. Breaking Free From Your Writing Slump
7 Nov 2009 | 9:00 amIt’s inevitable for writers to experience a sort of slump at one point of their career or another. Even the most famous of writers have experienced this, so you’re not exempted. It’s not so much as finding yourself unable to write, but it’s more on how your writing has become a bit stagnant for you and your audience. It’s not really a good thing for a writer to feel this way about his craft, especially if writing (in our case blogging) is his bread and butter. Now, how can you avoid this so-called slump? This is a question I’ve asked myself lots of times…

Who’s to blame by all these black propaganda?
10 Nov 2009 | 10:00 amIt’s truly election time in the Philippines. This is where the lowest form of the lowest form of any kind comes out. Forget about balimbings switching allegiances in seconds. Filipinos in terms of politics could be very nasty, to say the least, brutally low. I knew from the beginning that Hacienda Luisita will be Noynoy’s biggest problem. In fact, I actually saw this coming. I just received this from another blogfriend and I suspect that this will become viral and will be made viral by those anti-Aquino given the popularity of Noynoy’s ... -
Noynoy Ad Reminiscent of Nazi Propaganda?
9 Nov 2009 | 1:17 pmPhoto Credits: Insignificances I hate political advertisements. To me it’s just a waste of money that should be spent elsewhere. I would like the candidates to spend their election funds on projects that would be beneficial to people in need. Officially, I have no candidates yet. I’m still busy looking through candidates with my personal magnifying glass. There are the political ads, with their shots at informing the electorate of their platform, if there ever was one, but mostly their faces and their attempt of projecting themselves as candidates, pathetic as it ...
