18 Nov 2009 | 10:41 pmThis has been in the box for about a week now and I’ve only gotten the chance to do the un-boxing today (lots of other stuff in the line to unbox around here). First up is this JBL MX100 which is a stereo system with an iPod Dock and a CD player in tow. See our unboxing photos after the jump. The JBL MX100 is one big-ass iPod Dock (I mean it’s an 18-lbs gorilla of a music system). It’s got 2 integrated speakers, each with 30-watt power rating. All I can say for now is that it’s pretty loud. Aside from an iPod Dock which plugs in from the bottom left side (see photo),…

Philippines: Dita Tree saved 36 lives during floods
4 Nov 2009 | 5:51 pmA 40-fee Dita Tree became a refuge for 36 members of 7 families in Barangay Bagong Silangan (New East Village), Quezon City, Metro Manila as flood waters rose last September 26. The flashflood was caused by a record rainfall unleashed by Typhoon Ketsana which hit the Philippines last September. It was the worst flooding in the country in the past 40 years. There are only few Dita Trees left in urban Metro Manila. Barangay Bagong Silangan is an urban poor community located in the northeastern part of the country’s capital. More than 30 individuals died in this community during the flooding… -

Leptospirosis outbreak in the Philippines
1 Nov 2009 | 1:46 am“We have also already sent an SOS to the international community because this is the one of the biggest outbreaks not just in the Philippines but in the world…” This was the statement of Philippine Heath Secretary Francisco Duque III who announced a Leptospirosis outbreak in the flood-affected areas of the Philippines. More than 30 towns are still submerged in floodwaters one month after two strong typhoons hit the country’s capital and nearby provinces. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection affecting both humans and animals. It is acquired through direct contact with the… -
Disaster Management and the role of ICTs
27 Oct 2009 | 3:39 pmWhat is disaster management? What are the various stages that it involves? The terminology may differ depending on where you are. In New Zealand, for example, you would be talking of the 4R’s, namely Readiness, Response, Recovery and Reduction. In other places, such as India, it could be as outlined in the graphic below: Whatever the terminology, today it is an undeniable truth that the need of the hour is effective disaster management and preparation for a growing incidence, worldwide, of different forms of natural disasters. In a series of posts, we shall trace and examine the increasing… -

Where the trains run on time
6 Nov 2009 | 4:37 amThe results of a poll recently released by the US-based Gallup Organization say that some 700 million people worldwide would move to another country if they could. No, Filipinos didn’t lead the pack, despite the 2007 finding that nearly 20 percent of the population would take the next plane for another country — any country — if they could, and Philippine airports’ being choked daily with the 6,000 people who’re either leaving for jobs abroad or permanently relocating elsewhere. Ahead of everyone else was the population of sub-Saharan Africa, of which 38 percent was most… -
Law abiding and lawless
30 Oct 2009 | 5:00 amA conference among lawyers and journalists from several Asian countries including the Philippines is concluding in Cebu. Sponsored by the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) through the London-based Open Society Institute, it is the second gathering of its kind. The first was held in Hongkong two years ago and examined the legal environments in the varied legal and political contexts in which journalists have to function in Asia. The Cebu meeting has been looking into, among other topics, the ways in which lawyers and journalists have been cooperating to defend and advance free expression… -
The trapo mind
23 Oct 2009 | 7:23 amAfter living through three bad weeks, while on the way to a speaking engagement outside Manila it was my misfortune to be in the company of a local politician whose sentiments were firmly with the current national administration. The normally one hour trip turned into two and a half hours because, over the protests of the vehicle driver, he insisted that we use a route other than that which most travelers to our destination know has cut travel time by half. That gave him a captive audience of three (there was one other passenger, in addition to the driver), and he made free with his opinions… -
Media and disasters
16 Oct 2009 | 7:13 amMany media organizations are involved in relief operations, and there’s no question that their efforts are helping alleviate the humanitarian crisis the floods and landslides have created. No one so far has argued that the media should keep solely to their primary responsibility, which is that of reporting and interpreting events of public significance. The crisis is after all of such proportions, and the government capacity to deal with it so limited, that the people and the communities affected need all the help they can get. Media involvement in relief operations is also consistent with… -
The failing state
9 Oct 2009 | 7:20 amDespite the usual lament that they’re too dependent on the government, Filipinos especially the poor don’t run to the government when they need help; they call on the media first, whether as intermediaries with this or that agency, or as themselves the provider of solutions to their problems. This is markedly evident in broadcasting, where “public service” programs proliferate and rate. The need for these programs is driven by the increasing failure of public institutions to provide the many services that people need, such as police protection from violence, garbage collection, and,…

March set today to rush Freedom of Info Law
8 Nov 2009 | 9:21 pmTHE CLOCK is ticking fast, and the Senators are now facing judgment: Are they champions of the people’s right to know? Erap-Binay show:Same old, same old
25 Oct 2009 | 6:04 am(Photos by Tita C. Valderama, Video by Justine Espina Letargo) by Tita C. Valderama FORMER senator Ernesto Maceda called it a “people’s convention” but by all indications, it was a virtual proclamation rally for the Joseph Estrada - Jejomar Binay tandem in the May 2010 elections replete with all the hints of history repeating itself like a farce. The emcees had to correct themselves a couple of times that the event was a ‘declaration,’ not a proclamation, rally for the candidacies of the president who was ousted for plunder and perjury, and the outgoing mayor of Makati City.

What is an Influential Blogger?
16 Oct 2009 | 11:41 amJust what kind of a person is an influential blogger? Let’s start by eliminating current and shallow yardsticks on what truly defines an influential blogger. In my experience, an influential blogger is not solely shaped by the obvious metrics we usually associate it with. An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of subscribers and readers. An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of comments from each blog post. An influential blogger is not the one who has the highest average daily earnings from various blog advertising networks. An influential… -

I would recommend their lunch set meals, especially the Wagyu Beef Curry Rice! The wagyu beef is soft and the curry adds a wonderful flavor to it -- parang bistek tagalog but with creamy curry sauce. My Japanese foodie friend liked his Sushi Set meal, but I think Seryna's version is still better. This is a short post since I only tried this during lunchtime. Let me know what you think of this place. Dine - In Lunch Menu Toki… -
Kirin Chinese Dining
18 Nov 2009 | 2:00 pmKirin is the only Chinese restaurant in the Serendra and Boni High Street area that is worth trying out. They serve Hongkong Cantonese-style dishes that are pwede na. For me, the Best Chinese Restaurant in Bonifacio Global City is Eat Well! Delicious Kitchen, followed by Zhu Chinese Cuisine and next would be Kirin Chinese Dining. I'm not a fan of Fu despite the fact that it is associated with Hai Shin Lou. I would rather go across the street to Market! Market! and eat at Hap Chan. The price is relatively affordable but you would notice that the serving sizes are smaller than… -

It has a USB Stick design. The volume and movement controls can be seen at the side. All I like from this cute machine is it’s size and capacity. Travelling is Fun with a Sony Cybershot and Marine Pack
16 Nov 2009 | 4:03 pmHaven’t had this much fun with travel gears for a long time. Taking the Sony Cybershot DSC-T900 was the right choice as it’s small and lightweight, plus it can take HD videos at 720p. See a video tour of the Misibis Bay Raintree at Cagraray Island in Albay below. They say pictures tell a thousand words so these videos should be enough to describe the place. I originally wanted to bring my dSLR with me as this is a trip I thought I should never miss but I gave the point-and-shoot Sony Cybershot a chance (it was a huge risk). I thought as long as there was enough sunlight, I should… -

White Island (Camiguin)
1 Nov 2009 | 7:33 pmOne of the most popular tourist attractions in the Mindanao island of Camiguin is Medano Islet, popularly known as White Island. This island is actually just a sandbar with fine white sand (hence the name) and its shape changes with the constantly-shifting currents. In fact, what you can see in the high-res satellite imagery (and in the thumbnail) are two curves forming a sort of McDo-style ‘M’. Zoom out in Google Maps until you see the default low-resolution Landsat satellite imagery and you can now see a large inverted ‘C’. White Island is located off the coast of… -
Baguio Cathedral

These two are the seats of the Archdiocese of Manila and the Diocese of Antipolo respectively. So let us now “go” to Baguio and check out the Baguio Cathedral which is the seat of the Diocese of Baguio, which itself is under the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. Apo Reef
15 Oct 2009 | 7:11 amI’ve decided to participate in Blog Action Day for the first time this year. Blog Action Day is a collective action among the world’s bloggers to talk about one important topic on October 15 of every year. For 2009, the topic is climate change. This is a timely topic since Typhoon Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng recently ravaged the Philippines with record-breaking (and heart-breaking) effects, which many meteorologists and scientists are attributing to climate change. In addition, the world’s leaders will be meeting in Copenhagen to discuss this topic, so collective voices are… -
Ateneo de Zamboanga University
10 Oct 2009 | 1:59 amSince I’ve already blogged about Xavier University and the Ateneo de Davao University here way, way before, I figured, why not complete the trio of Mindanao Jesuit schools and feature the Ateneo de Zamboanga University? The main campus of the university is in downtown Zamboanga City while the Tumaga Campus, which houses the High School, is located further upland. The University was founded in 1912, making it the second oldest Jesuit school in the Philippines after the Ateneo de Manila University. It started as the Escuela Catolica before being renamed as the Ateneo de Zamboanga in 1916. -
Lucena Grand Central Terminal
1 Oct 2009 | 2:08 amIf you’re going to Bicol from the Manila area or to other towns of Quezon province further from Lucena City, then the Lucena Grand Central Terminal should be a stopover in your itinerary. Located along the Diversion Road, the terminal is a huge building catering to commuters from all over southern Luzon. From here, you can go to the northern towns of Quezon like Lucban and Infanta or to the Bicol Peninsula. I think tricycles and/or jeepneys can also take you to the city proper of Lucena about 2 km to the south. Photo by Lucentino over at SkyscraperCity forums. The terminal also contains…

When Friends Leave… Let Go!
15 Nov 2009 | 5:15 am“The friendship that can cease has never been real.”- Saint Jerome You would think 50-year olds act maturely in the face of adversity. I am sure most of us can. A recent misunderstanding among old friends (including myself) jolted me. We are talking of years of friendship. It started with a gossip. If there is gossip among friends, clear the air instead of being defensive and ignoring the issue. What’s funny is that they chose to place the scapegoat on the “informant” which is immaterial because the issue is the malicious gossip. A mere explanation or an apology would have… -

5 Nov 2009 | 3:46 amI remember my first TV interview. I was not prepared to talk in Tagalog. First of all, MOMS is an english word so I thought the interview was in English. When I saw the script, I was horrified. I asked the writer: So I have to reply in Tagalog? I don’t speak Tagalog so well. It can be Taglish. the production staff said Taglish is just as worse. So throughout the interview, I struggled for the words, figuring out what the Tagalog word for grief….feelings…etcetera. Suffice it to say, I had a Take 2. It was a pain to speak in Taglish. Here in the Philippines, Big Bird was the first logo that appeared. And just an hour ago, Cookie Monster. My fearless forecast is this will be going on for 5 more days, with Elmo, Bert and Ernie, Grover and Oscar the Grouch receiving their own doodles. Google-STI Business Stimulus Package
3 Nov 2009 | 7:32 amGoogle, in partnership with STI, are offering a unique opportunity for businesses to promote their products and services online through the Philippine Business Stimulus Package. During these trying times, businesses may find it difficult to attract potential clients, be it offline or online. Online, Google takes care of that by offering a hefty P2,000 credit on Google Adwords. I’ve only seen P1,000 Adword credits being given away before and I was quite pleased to see them up the ante to P2,000. For businesses who have no online presence, STI can do the job for them for only P3,000. But…

MB in Hong Kong
11 Nov 2009 | 5:52 amBlogFest.Asia, the first-ever pan-Asia bloggers’ conference, became a venue for introducing the Mindanao Bloggers Community to the world. Put together by the DotAsia Organisation (the registrar for .asia domain names) in Hong Kong from 6 to 8 November 2009, 3 Filipinos were present at BlogFest.Asia to provide the audience with primers on the Philippine blogosphere. (Actually there were 4 Filipinos there, but the fourth one was invited as the representative of Creative Commons – Asia.) It was the experience of Mindanao’s bloggers, however, that really got the attention of… -
The 3rd Summit
29 Oct 2009 | 2:30 pmThe 3rd Mindanao Bloggers Summit, held in Cagayan de Oro City last 24 October 2009, despite a rather poor showing in the number of participants, was another feather in the cap of the MB Community. The CDO Bloggers group displayed their cohesiveness and enthusiasm and unfailing energy to pull off the event quite admirably. The highlight of this year’s Summit was the involvement of the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy, Ms. Leslie Bassett, who delivered an eye-opening and inspiring presentation about the contributions her government has made to the progress of Mindanao. -
The bloggers of Zamboanga
20 Oct 2009 | 10:58 pmI was very happy to have visited — at long last! — Asia’s Latin City (from 17 to 20 October), and to have touched base with the bloggers of Zamboanga. I’d already met some of them online (and two of them ‘offline’ during the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit last year), but seeing them all together in their own milieu was most gratifying. The Zambo bloggers started becoming active and participatory in the Mindanao Bloggers Community around last year. They even sent tentative feelers to the MB core group as to the possibility of their hosting MBS3. This is a… -
Mindanaoan Artist in Lexicon of Surrealism
15 Oct 2009 | 4:31 amAt a time when Manila is rocked by controversies surrounding the questionable declaration of some personalities as National Artists, a Davao-born art talent quietly carved a niche among history’s greatest surrealists. His stuttering childlike speech, incompatible with his towering 6-foot height, sometimes amuses people. But today, Bienvenido Banez, Jr., towers all the more for achievements uncommon among Filipino artists. Diagnosed with mild learning disability during childhood, Ben’s focus of attention has always been his art. Rightly so. In 2002, he won first place in the Asian… -
Blogging for peace initiative
10 Oct 2009 | 8:24 amThe Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), through its Southeast Asian regional secretariat, Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), has launched a worthy program that is very much in line with what the Mindanao Bloggers Community stands for: iBlogforPeace. “iBlogforPeace seeks to broaden the discourse on peace by providing an online platform for civil society, particularly the unorganized and the bloggers community, to take part in the conversations in their own contexts and engage in dialogues with kindred individuals and groups such as peace advocates.

Healthy Shabu Shabu Contest: Win 1,000 Peso GCs!
19 Nov 2009 | 9:20 pmIt’s been a while since my last visit to Healthy Shabu-Shabu, but the tasty new items on the menu makes me want to go back sometime soon. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the concept, Healthy Shabu-Shabu is a Japanese-style hot pot dish where you get to cook meat, seafood, and vegetables in chicken or mushroom stock right at your table. It’s a fun way to eat and because it takes a while for the food to cook, it’s a great place for conversations. It just occurred to me too that Healthy Shabu-Shabu is a perfect place for a first date or blind date too –… -
Napoleones: My New Favorite Dessert
16 Nov 2009 | 9:11 pmNext to Trinoma, Megamall is my least favorite mall in the world. It’s huge, it’s crowded, and the taxi queues are ridiculous. But I would gladly brave all of those just to get my hands on a box of my newest favorite dessert. After our Korean dinner at Kaya, my boyfriend and I made a beeline for the Napoloeones stand at the ground floor of Megamall A. I have never heard of Napoleones until my boyfriend gave me my first bite of this delightfully sweet, custard-y pastry. Napoleones is a delicacy from Bacolod loosely adapted from the French napoleon pastry – a square puff… -
A Korean Dinner at Kaya Restaurant
15 Nov 2009 | 7:54 pmThe Broadway musical Avenue Q has a song that goes, “Everyone’s a little bit racist sometimes.” I’ll be honest and say that I haven’t been too crazy about Koreans after I had an emotionally traumatizing scuffle with one of them in San Francisco. My boyfriend, however, is crazy about Korean food and managed to convince me to try it for the first time in my life. A few months ago we had dinner at Kaya, where I realized that Korean food is good enough to make me become a little more understanding and tolerant about their cultural quirks. Last Saturday we had another… -
C2 Classic Cuisine Greenhills Grand Opening
11 Nov 2009 | 9:29 pmSeveral years ago, I attended the Center of Culinary Arts’ Kitchen Discovery Class, where I got an inside view of the kitchen and had a fine lunch at Cravings. I haven’t been back to Cravings since then, but last night I got to attend the grand launch of a Filipino restaurant from the same group. C2 Classic Cuisine on Missouri Street, North Greenhills used to be an events place, but they decided to include a restaurant that serves classic Filipino dishes with a contemporary twist. C2 Classic Cuisine made me enjoy certain Filipino foods I’m normally not too crazy about. For… -
Alli Orlistat: A Weight-Loss Pill that Won’t Kill You
10 Nov 2009 | 8:53 pmIf only losing weight were as easy as taking a pill. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way; while you could lose weight quickly using dubious diet pills, effective weight loss requires dietary modifications and a lifestyle change (more exercise). However, I discovered that there is a diet pill out there that can help you lose weight without killing you. Alli Orlistat is a weight-loss aid that will help you lose weight more efficiently – for every 2 pounds you lose, Orlistat can help you lose one more. The capsule should be taken three times a day, once during or after each meal…

This Is It -- my review
29 Oct 2009 | 2:58 pmMy friend Isa reserved seats for the first showing of This Is it for Wednesday, Oct 28 at 2pm. I was looking forward to spending a few hours with another MJ fan. My morning was busy since it was the middle of the school week and breakfast started extra early. I was ready to head for the train station (the cinema is located in another city) when I remembered that my trusty ol' bicycle was used by one of the boys. Yipes! I am not going to run in my boots! So I breathed deeply and walked briskly to the train station. Thoughts of my missing the train creeped into my brain and the only way I could… -

The Long View: Back to the future
18 Nov 2009 | 7:43 pmThe Long View Back to the future By Manuel L. Quezon III Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 20:32:00 11/18/2009 THREE THINGS stand out in the latest Social Weather Stations Pulse Asia survey. The first is that Benigno Aquino III’s numbers represents the highest percentage for a candidate since the multiparty system was introduced in 1987, surpassing the record set by Joseph Ejercito Estrada in the 1998 surveys. The second is that he almost has a 2-to-1 lead over the next strongest contender, Manuel Villar Jr. The third is that both Aquino and Villar’s numbers puts them way ahead of… -
The Long View: Comelec lays down case for persecution
15 Nov 2009 | 7:00 pmThe Long View Comelec lays down case for persecution By Manuel L. Quezon III Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 00:14:00 11/16/2009 THERE is no point arguing the merits of the Comelec’s decision to deny Ang Ladlad recognition as a party-list group. That is because there are none. The paper produced and signed by Commissioners Nicodemus Ferrer, Lucenito Tagle and Elias Yusoph is a religious tract masquerading as a legal document. However, it has legal consequences and that requires examination—and opposition. The Comelec commissioners’ faith-based opinion now enjoys the presumption… -

13 Nov 2009 | 12:20 amIn Hi’s and hello’s in three stages, I wanted to point out that there are different stages in a presidential campaign, and that we’re transitioning from one stage to another, namely from the first to second stages of the campaign. First stage: Introducing Yourself and Making Friends: potential candidates put themselves forward for consideration by the public in its capacity as the body politic that constitutes the membership of political parties (Anytime from May 10, 2007 to Oct. 20, 2009) Much as Filipinos followed the American presidential contest, and are in some ways… -

4 Nov 2009 | 8:47 pmThe Long View A wedge of Chiz By Manuel L. Quezon III Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 23:49:00 11/04/2009 IN JAKARTA OVER THE WEEKEND, I discovered that a famous political saying from the Philippines enjoys wide currency particularly within the circle of President Sudhuyono: “My loyalty to my party ends where my loyalty to my country begins.” The phrase dates back to 1922 when public opinion became a factor in elections and it summarizes the recent decision of Francis Escudero to renounce his party affiliation and to adopt—in fact, reintroduce—a proposal first made in 1940,… -

The Changing Computing Landscape
19 Nov 2009 | 7:06 pmWill the Litl be the next Apple Computer? It was January 24, 1984 when the first Macintosh said, “hello”. It was the first successful personal computer that used images, rather than text to interact with the user. It wasn’t by far the first computer to have a graphical user interface and a mouse. A decade later, PCs would standardize on the concept through Windows and the rest as people say, has been history. Twenty five years later, the world as we know it is little changed from that first Macintosh design. Much of our computing relies on point and click. And much of our… -
Loren, Loren Sinta: The Villar Legarda Tandem
18 Nov 2009 | 1:15 pmFrom October 2007 until as recent as June 2009 amid continuing crises of confidence in government fueled by its historic lack of credibility, when we need most to believe in democracy, two constantly provide with leadership we can trust. Last Tuesday, when Senator Loren Legarda answered not simply political wooing but a timely appeal to serve a higher calling, the equations defining 2010’s tandems of convenience based on “winability” changed. Suddenly there was substance. Senator and Business Mirror columnist Manuel Villar chose his running mate correctly. For all the mud thrown his… -

I will refer you to Senate Resolution 1472, that piece of document purportedly signed by twelve “See-Nay”-tors and allegedly cleared the name of Nacionalista party presidential bet and billionaire Senator Manny Villar. The Resolution, which was purportedly written and pushed by no less than Liberal Party member Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, expressed the “sense of the Senate” and bore the signatures of Aquilino Pimentel Jr., Alan Peter Cayetano, Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, Gregorio Honasan, Joker… -
The Challenge of the Next President of the Philippines
17 Nov 2009 | 8:51 amIn Ham and Eggs, I wrote that the time for staying in the sidelines is over. That the choice shouldn’t be made on election day, but right now. That each Filipino must choose now, who their candidate is. I’ve also mentioned that my personal barometer for success– no matter who wins in next year’s contest is simply to put an end to corruption. Transparency International ranked the Philippines number 139 on its Corruption Perception Index. As a corollary take a look at this screenshot I took of the Global Competitive Report 2009-2010: Global Competitive Report Philippines… -
Whose election frame will dominate?
17 Nov 2009 | 7:11 amSlander cannot destroy an honest man—when the flood recedes the rock is there.—Chinese proverb Pulse Asia just released its latest nationwide survey on the top choices for president. Noynoy Aquino is at 44 percent while Manuel Villar, Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Joseph Estrada are at 19, 13 and 11 percent, respectively. That makes the 2009 election a race for second place. But that’s only true if honesty and an unblemished reputation remains the horse to ride. Pulse Asia asked their respondents why they were voting for a particular candidate. The five top reasons cited were:…

Mock Thanksgiving Dinner
17 Nov 2009 | 8:53 pmThe concept of a Thanksgiving dinner to celebrate the bountiful harvest of the past summer and to give thanks for all the good things in life before the hard cold winter sets in is something I have always enjoyed. Of course it also happens to have become a major food holiday so that can't hurt either. But if you've lived in New England and can empathize with the early English settlers in the region some 400 years ago, and the harsh winters they endured, it's easier to appreciate the underpinnings of the holiday. When we first moved back to Manila, we used to have a Thanksgiving dinner every… -
The Jerk Magnet Strikes Again…
16 Nov 2009 | 11:32 pmThe Intellectual Property Gods are at it again. Egging Marketman on, in yet another "jerk magnet" moment (a phrase coined by reader "Toping") of nearly incomprehensible coincidences. I arrived in Cebu a few hours ago and got to the office. After an hour or two, a call to the Zubuchon phone line is answered, and a lady from the Marriott Hotel in Cebu asks if we would be interested in participating in an organic weekend market in December. She is told to fax details. The fax arrives. And the event is sponsored by the "Ayala Business Club of Cebu" together with the Marriott Hotel. Pretty…
